January 11, 2024

The Lindenhurst Fire Department was alerted for a reported vehicle fire next to a building at Surfside 3 Marina on South Wellwood Avenue about 00:45 on January 11, 2024. Chief of Department Collins, Second Assistant Chief Cutolo, and Third Assistant Chief Brink were the first units to respond. Chief Collins was given additional information that Suffolk County Police were on scene with a fully involved car and the side of the building on fire. Engine 1-6-1 was first due and was followed by Engine 1-6-6 and Ladder 1-6-4. The crew from 1-6-1 stretched the initial line to start extinguishing the fire. As the first line was operating, it was realized that what was burning was what was left of a Tesla. Engine 1-6-6 secured a hydrant and supplied 1-6-1. That crew then put a second line into operation. Ladder 1-6-4 set up in front of the building, and its crew went to the roof to check for extension, then made entry into the building to do the same. The damage to the building was contained to the exterior. A Chevy Tahoe parked near the Tesla had heat damage to it's paint. Although the fire was knocked down quickly, units were on scene about an hour and forty-five minutes, operating both lines to cool the battery cells of the electric car. A representative from the marina assisted with the use of a forklift to first lift the shell of the vehicle to get the lines access to the bottom of the vehicle, then flipped the vehicle completely over. The lines operated until it was deemed that the cells were cooled enough to shut down. There were no injuries, the Village of Lindenhurst Fire Marshal and Suffolk County Police Arson Squad were requested to investigate the cause of the fire.
