Ex-Captain James Greenrose of Chemical & Salvage Co. No. 2 passed away suddenly on February 25, 2006. A Tribute To Ex-Captain James Greenrose

by Ex-Captain Kevin Condrick

On Wednesday, March 1, 2006 the Lindenhurst Fire Department laid to rest one of their own. Ex-Captain James Greenrose of Chemical & Salvage Co. No. 2 passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 25, 2006.

James was a fireman's fireman - even at the age of 66, he was always one of the first to arrive at the firehouse for alarms and usually chauffeured Engine 161. Aside from being a steady chauffeur of the engine, Jimmy was recently appointed to the position of Chief's Aide for the Lindenhurst Fire Department, which kept him very busy. During what could have been his retirement years, he responded to many alarms, ensuring that the NYS Fire Reports were accurately completed for each. He also assisted the fire marshals and SCPD Arson Squad in fire investigations within Lindenhurst. During his more than 35 years in the fire service, Ex-Captain Greenrose served as an Auxiliary NY City Fireman, full-time Fire Marshal for the Melville Fire District, and as a truckie for both the North Lindenhurst and Lindenhurst Fire Departments.

In 1981, Jimmy transferred to Chemical & Salvage Co. No. 2 of the Lindenhurst Fire Department where he remained active until his untimely passing. While a member of Sheet 4, he held several company and line offices including those of Captain and Treasurer. Jimmy was a seasoned fire service veteran who was respected by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Ex-Captain Greenrose is survived by his wife, son, daughter, grandchildren, and his 250 plus brother and sister firefighters in the Lindenhurst Fire Department. His passing has left his brothers in Sheet-4 with a void that can't be filled, a personality that can't be matched, and a knowledge base that can't be replaced.
